Measuring Guide

Measure With
Confidence. Or Let Us Handle It.

Professional measuring is part of the Roadrunner experience. Our team evaluates more than width and height — we look at mounting depth, trim, obstructions, operating clearance and the product you're selecting to help ensure the right fit.

For custom projects, professional measuring is always recommended.

The right fit makes all the difference.

1. Before You Pick Up the Tape Measure

A few simple tips will help ensure accurate measurements.

01

Use an Accurate Measuring Tool

Use a quality steel tape measure or a reliable laser measuring device. Measurements should be precise and recorded carefully.

02

Width × Height

Always record measurements as width first, then height.

03

Measure Every Window

Even windows that appear identical can have slightly different dimensions.

04

Don't Make Deductions

Record the actual opening measurements. Do not automatically subtract from your measurements. Product-specific manufacturing allowances can vary.

2. Inside Mount or Outside Mount?

The mount you choose can change the look of your window and the amount of light control.

Inside mount window treatment
Inside Mount

The treatment installs inside the window opening.

Why choose it:
  • Clean, built-in appearance
  • Keeps trim visible
  • Treatment sits closer to the glass
  • Requires adequate mounting depth
Outside mount window treatment
Outside Mount

The treatment installs over the opening, typically on the trim or wall.

Why choose it:
  • Useful when inside mounting depth is limited
  • Can provide greater coverage
  • Can help reduce light around the edges
  • Can visually make a window appear larger

3. Measuring Basic Blinds & Shades

These general guidelines apply to many of the blinds and shades available in our online store.

Inside Mount

WIDTH
Measure the inside width at the top, middle and bottom. Record all three measurements.

HEIGHT
Measure the inside height at the left, center and right. Record all three measurements.

Do not make your own deductions. Follow the ordering instructions for the specific product you're purchasing.

Outside Mount

Measure the area you want the finished treatment to cover.

WIDTH
Determine the desired width, including how much extra coverage you want on each side.

HEIGHT
Measure from the intended mounting location at the top to where you want the treatment to end.

Every product is a little different.

Required mounting depth, clearances and manufacturing deductions can vary by product and operating system. Follow the ordering instructions provided with the specific RWF online product you're purchasing.

4. There's More to Measuring Than Width × Height

When Roadrunner measures, we look at the details that can make or break the final fit.
